Memo to the press: Lieberman is an Independent

I was just watching a clip of a press conference about the Iraq situation on CNN with appearances by John McCain and Joe Lieberman. CNN identified Lieberman as '(I/D)- Connecticut' - an odd designation that I've never seen applied to any other Independent politician.

Lieberman is clearly an Independent since he lost the Democratic party's nomination in the primary to challenger Ned Lamont. What is CNN trying to prove by labeling Lieberman as (I/D)?

And they're not the only ones. Check out this AP story on the press conference:

Sen. Joseph Lieberman (news, bio, voting record), D-Conn., said the delegation had met with Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite, and urged him to break his ties with anti-U.S. cleric Muqtada al-Sadr and disarm his Mahdi Army militia.

And in the Stamford Connecticut Advocate:

Lieberman, a Democrat, visited Stark to highlight legislation he's co-sponsoring that would restrict the sale of unhealthy snacks in schools.

It seems the media have a bit of catching up to do.
