US & UK Discuss Closing Gitmo

The Bush administration is tired of the bad press it's getting over Gitmo, so they're talking to the Brits to figure out how they can close the facility. It seems Abu Gonzales is seeking advice from the Brits because they recently wanted to deport detainees to countries in the Middle East and Africa, which caused quite a revolt by those concerned about those pesky human rights issues.

Here's what Gonzales seems to be worried about - or what he wants the rest of the world to think he's worried about:

Senior Bush administration figures have asked British officials for advice on how to hand alleged terrorists over to regimes with a reputation for torture and extra-judicial killings, such as Saudi Arabia, Algeria and Pakistan.

And, if you think Gonzales really cares about what happens to these detainees, you have to wonder why he hasn't investigated the "extraordinary rendition" program ie. torture flights the CIA is still running. Maybe he should just use that program to disappear the Gitmo detainees as well. That seems like the easiest solution.

Fucking wanker.
