Since Feingold announced his resolution, Democrats have been dipping into their handy excuse bins and have come up with many lame reasons for not supporting the senator. They include: not having enough warning and needing time to think about it and stating that Feingold has jumped the gun while foolishly believing the Republican-controlled congress will actually thoroughly investigate the illegal spying program.
The quieter rumblings, however, seem to indicate that some see Feingold as the anti-Hillary - a man who opposed the Iraq war and whose climbing popularity is beyond their control. Even the press has written off Feingold with the Republican talking point that he's just posturing for a presidential run in '08. Rubbish.
Bush needs to be called out on this illegal spying now - not after acquiescing to the Republicans who are retroactively trying to change the laws to give Bush legal cover, by which time it will be too late.
As this New York Times editorial states today:
The administration seems determined to cut off legitimate court scrutiny, and the Republicans who dominate the House and Senate generally intervene only to change the rules so Mr. Bush can do whatever he wants. (If the current Congress had been called on to intervene in the case of Mr. Allen, it would probably have tried to legalize shoplifting.)
Contact Feingold and Harkin to let them know they are doing the right thing at the right time. And, contact those Democrats who have yet to sign on to tell them that you expect them to act like the opposition members they're supposed to be. This isn't about politics. It's about a criminal president. Which part of that don't they get?
