Update: DHS Press Secretary Has Confessed

Department of Homeland Security press secretary, Brian Doyle, arrested on Tuesday on charges of seducing a child online along with "16 counts of transmission of harmful material to a minor", has reportedly confessed.

Via CNN:
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said that Doyle had confessed to the allegations.

Earlier Wednesday, DHS placed the deputy press secretary on administrative leave without pay and suspended his security clearance, employee badge and facility access permissions.

It appears his defense team has already decided on its strategy/excuse:

He described his client as "obviously, a very, very depressed man" and said he would like to explore whether there was something in Doyle's life that may have "triggered" the event.

Conventional wisdom tells us that by the time a sexual predator is actually caught and charged, there is little doubt he has probably had other victims. This "depression" defense is highly suspect. His lawyers claim that family tragedies that occurred years ago at this time of year might be responsible for his current state of mind. That does not explain why a man in his mid-fifties would suddenly turn to preying on a child.

Doyle would serve society well by simply pleading guilty if, in fact, he is - sparing all of us from what will be a sham of a defense tactic that will only seek to marginalize the millions of people who suffer daily from depression. The stigma of mental illness is hard enough to deal with without having some sexual predator claiming "the depression made me do it".
