Random News & Views Roundup (headache edition)

- No-brainer headline of the day: After 9/11, Arab-Americans Fear Police Acts, Study Finds. For some reason, the New York Times thinks this is 'news'.

And, just like the recycled troops in Iraq:

The study also concluded that local police officers and federal agents were straining under the pressure to fight terrorism, and that new federal policies in this effort were poorly defined and inconsistently applied.

And, if you believe that so-called bridges are being built between law enforcement and the Muslim and/or Arab-American communities, you need to watch Nazih Hassan of CAIR who spoke at the ACLU's town hall meeting earlier this evening.

- Speaking of the ACLU and civil liberties:

Oral arguments are set for Monday at U.S. District Court in Detroit at which the American Civil Liberties Union will ask Judge Anna Diggs Taylor to declare the spying unconstitutional and order it halted.

The ACLU sued the NSA on behalf of scholars, journalists and attorneys, claiming that warrantless wiretaps violate the U.S. Constitution and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978, or FISA.

Government lawyers will try to get this case dismissed by claiming the 'state secrets' defense but, as ACLU lawyer Ann Beeman has correctly stated, several government officials - including Bush - have publicly confirmed the existence of this spying, so what possible secrets are there to protect?

- US ambassador to the UN John Bolton is a raging bull in a china shop. Those of use who opposed his nomination to the post from day one already knew that, of course. A Monday Washington Post editorial skewers Bolton for his bullish behaviour.

- Some right-wing bloggers are just too damn ignorant to be blogging at all.

Canada jihadists grew more devout, began to plot

Yet Canadian officials fell over themselves to assure the world that the plot had nothing to do with Islam. How long will they ignore what is in front of their faces, and decline to confront what will destroy them if it is not confronted?

And just how long will bloggers like this decline to confront reality and actual facts? Name me one Canadian official who said those arrested had no ties to radical Islam. I'm waiting...

- One marine speaks up to defend himself against the Haditha related allegations. These marines are innocent until proven guilty. I'm left wondering why he didn't go public after Time's story came out earlier this year, however.

- Following Israeli Prime Minister Olmert's expression of 'deep sorrow' over the deaths at a Gaza beach earlier this week, Olmert then went on to launch air strikes on Gaza. Peace means never having to say you're sorry.
