The US military released the news today that the two missing soldiers in Iraq have been found dead after supposedly being tortured and surrounded by IEDs which hampered the recovery of the bodies.
A tragedy.
And it is a tragedy in a very long line of tragedies.
On the blogosphere, partisan battles have already ensued with Republicans and Conservatives declaring that the left will use these deaths for political gain for decrying the war while, at the same time, pointing to the barbarism of the deaths as proof that the insurgents are all evil and the war is justified.
Why is it that when senseless things like this happen we can't just all take a breath for a moment to mourn - without political attacks?
As an antiwar advocate, of course I feel strongly about the absolute failure the Iraq war has become and I understand why those who support it must continually find reasons for their stand. Fine. So both sides see these deaths from a different perspective and we can talk about that.
But let's not forget that two people are dead. That cannot be lost here. They have families and friends who are devestated.
We all have larger issues to address but let's never forget that lives have been lost, because that would be the biggest tragedy in all of this.
And if we are going to discuss the war, let's do it in civil tones. I have to wonder if that's even possible anymore...
