Random News & Views Roundup

- Via CNN and WABC: a small plane (or helicopter) has reportedly crashed into a building on E. 71st street 72nd and York in New York City. There are also 'a number of apartments completely engulfed in flames' according to CNN.

The FBI, according to CNN, believes this is probably not a terrorist incident but NORAD has decided to send fighter jets out over several US cities anyway.

FOX's WNYW has live streaming coverage online.

FDNY confirms one fatality so far. Make that two.

According to CNN's Pentagon reporter Barbara Star, the NORAD commander found out about this incident on CNN and then decided to take action based on what he saw. Ummm...NORAD relies on CNN to hear about security breaches? Do you feel safer now?

CNN is now reporting that the plane is registered to the New York Yankees' pitcher Cory Lidle. Apparently his passport was found on the street below the wreckage as well.

- No one can blame this announcement, just weeks before the election, on the Democrats (but you know they'll try to anyway): Army: Troops to stay in Iraq until 2010.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Army has plans to keep the current level of soldiers in Iraq through 2010, the top Army officer said Wednesday, a later date than Bush administration or Pentagon officials have mentioned thus far.

Exactly how the army intends to fulfill that committment for another 4 years is unknown since soldiers and members of the National Guard have already been sorely taxed by repeated deployments. No doubt some Republican supporters will try to spin this one by claiming that General Shoomaker is a disgruntled Democrat who hates America.

- American al Qaeda member, Adam Gadahn may reportedly be charged with treason - the first American to be prosecuted for that offense in 50 years.

The sources denied the case was timed to deflect attention from the fallout over lewd computer messages sent by a former Republican congressman to young male aides, a scandal that may help Democrats seize control of Congress in November 7 election.

Right. Sure. Uh huh.

One wonders why John Walker Lindh and Hamdi weren't charged with treason as well. But, no, this new charge against Gadahn has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that the GOP is tanking, right?

- The explosions at the Baghdad army depot were the result of an insurgent attack.

- In response to the recent study that concluded there have been over 655,000 deaths in Iraq since the war began, Bush said on Wednesday that 'the methodology has been pretty much discredited' - maybe by his Yes Men but that certainly isn't the consensus among experts.

QUESTION: So the figure's 30,000, Mr. President? Do you stand by your figure, 30,000?

BUSH: I, you know, I stand by the figure a lot of innocent people have lost their life. 600,000 or whatever they guessed at is just, it's not credible. Thank you.

- Every time Bush opens his mouth, a lie spills out:

BUSH: Gas prices are down. Tax cuts are working. And there's a difference of opinion in the campaign about taxes.

And we will keep them low. As a matter of fact, I would like to keep -- make the tax cuts we passed permanent. And the Democrats will raise taxes.

Now, I know they say, "Only on rich people," but that's, in my judgment, having been around here long enough to know, it's just codeword. They're going to raise them on whoever they can raise them on.

'Codeword'? It seems, by reading through transcript of Wednesday's press conference, that he forgot to take his How to Speak Proper English™ pill once again. It's just painful to see how he mangles the English language.

Update: This could spell big ethical trouble for Sen Harry Reid (D-NV). AP Exclusive: Reid Got $1M in Land Sale. I wonder if that's one of Rove's October surprises.
