ABC Outs Alleged Zarqawi Informant

Via ABC's blog:

An Iraqi customs agent secretly working with Abu Musab al-Zarqawi's terror cell spilled the beans on the group after he was arrested, Jordanian officials tell ABC News.

Ziad Khalaf Raja al-Karbouly was arrested by Jordanian intelligence forces last spring.

Officials say Karbouly confessed to his role in the terror cell and provided crucial information on the names of Zarqawi commanders and locations of their safe houses.

It's been widely reported by several media sources that it was actually Zarqawi's spiritual advisor who 'unwittingly' led the coalition to Zarqawi's safe house.

ABC's blog also repeats the claim that Karbouly was responsible for kidnapping Moroccan embassy employees. When he was arrested Iraq's Interior Ministry denied that claim and al Qaeda also put out a public web site statement saying that Karbouly was not known to them.

Regardless, one would think that an administration that seems so concerned about state secrets and national security procedures would be loath to allow this type of leak about Karbouly's supposed cooperation in the Zarqawi affair to be made public. In fact, it seems that many aspects of this operation have been made freely available to the press.

Considering Karbouly was a guest of the Jordanians, a country known for torture, one can't help but wonder how Karbourly's statements were brought to light. Beyond that, will his family now be targetted by al Quaeda and Zarqawi sympathizers since he's been outed as the alleged informant?

And what responsibility should ABC have in all of this?

As you can see by the hundreds of comments on their blog, opinions are varied, but these questions deserve some honest answers from ABC.
