Why Are Democrats So Afraid of the "I" Word?

Appearing on a Sunday morning talk show, House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi announced that if the Dems regain control of congress in the fall, they will not seek impeachment of George W Bush. Instead, Pelosi said, they would hold hearings on the pre-Iraq war intelligence and other troubling issues.

"I said we'd be having hearings on the war, we'd have hearings. But I don't see us going to a place of impeachment," Pelosi said in an interview on NBC's Meet the Press. "Investigation does not equate to impeachment. Investigation is the requirement of Congress. It is about checks and balances."

With Bush's approval numbers at an all-time low and opposition to the Iraq war at an all-time high, why would the Dems back away from the "I" word? All of the evidence to this points to the fact that the Bush cabal 'fixed' the intel around their policy to remove Saddam and that, despite the fact that many Americans still believe the Bushco-led lie, Hussein and al Qaeda were not connected - making the illegal war on Iraq a calculated sidestep from the war on terrorism after 9/11.

It seems the only Democrats that actually have a spine these days are Congressman John Conyers and those who back his effort to impeach Bush.

With the recent revelations that Bush has absolutely no regard for the rule of law, successfully circumventing some 750 of them and with only two Democrats from Massachussets willing to challenge his self-appointed authority to do so with a resolution after Republican senator Arlen Specter announced earlier this week that he will hold hearings in June to investigate Bush's claims, it's no wonder the public still doesn't trust the congressional Democrats to speak on their behalf.

They can't count on the rubber-stamp Republican-led congress and their only other viable option is the Democratic party and, at this point, the Democrats have nothing to lose by vigorously challenging Bush as forcefully as possible. The public approval of congress has completely tanked. This is not the time for Democrats to be timid if they want to prove that they truly represent the wishes of their constituents who have had enough of Bush and his party. Politics for the sake of politics is a losing agenda. Bush deserves to be impeached. When will the majority of the Democrats finally admit that?

Sidebar: Boo Man offers a counter-argument to mine and believes Pelosi is on the right track by avoiding impeachment talk.
