The 'anti-Lieberman jihad'

LA Times reporter, Jonathan Chait, warns: 'Don't let the left defeat Lieberman'; 'The last thing the Democratic cause needs is martyrdom for the sanctimonious senator from Connecticut.', continues Chait.

Let Joe be a martyr after he's soundly defeated. No one will care about him anymore anyway.

Chait details the many times Lieberman has kissed Bush's butt and then concludes:

In the end, though, I can't quite root for Lieberman to lose his primary. What's holding me back is that the anti-Lieberman campaign has come to stand for much more than Lieberman's sins. It's a test of strength for the new breed of left-wing activists who are flexing their muscles within the party. These are exactly the sorts of fanatics who tore the party apart in the late 1960s and early 1970s. They think in simple slogans and refuse to tolerate any ideological dissent. Moreover, since their anti-Lieberman jihad is seen as stemming from his pro-war stance, the practical effect of toppling Lieberman would be to intimidate other hawkish Democrats and encourage more primary challengers against them.

Fanatics? Jihads? Why didn't he go one step further and just call the crazy left a bunch of terrorists?

Leftists oppose Lieberman and are launching strong support for his Democratic opponent, Ned Lamont, because they're sick and tired of Lieberman pretending he's a Democrat. It's that simple. Sure, there are conservative Democrats, but when you find one who's actually a Republican Democrat a la Zell Miller, he needs to go - quickly.

Lieberman's quite welcome to stick the back of his hand up against his forehead after he loses to Lamont while claiming his martyrdom status but he'd better not to it for too long or his hand will get stuck there permanently.
