Charge Laid In Income Trust Leak Case

Via CBC:

The RCMP have concluded a 14-month investigation into the possible leak of income trust tax details by charging a senior civil servant in the Finance Department with breach of trust.

Serge Nadeau, the general director of analysis, tax policy branch, was charged Thursday, the RCMP said in a statement on Thursday.

The RCMP allege Nadeau, 50, "used confidential government information for the purchase of securities which gave him a personal benefit."

If found guilty, Nadeau could face a prison term of up to five years.

With the charging of Nadeau and the RCMP saying its investigation is now at an end, it means no politician will face charges.

Those familiar with this case will remember the RCMP announcing this investigation during the last election campaign after the NDP's Judy Wasylycia-Leis cried foul. The resulting suspicion that surrounded Ralph Goodale and the Liberal party then caused their poll numbers and support to drop.

CBC reports that Jack Layton is calling for the Liberals to apologize to Wasylycia-Leis. The Liberals want the Conservatives to apologize to Ralph Goodale whom they attacked relentlessly and who has now released this very brief statement about the conclusion to the investigation:

I welcome the conclusion of this investigation.

The investigation has indicated no involvement in this matter by me, my staff or any other political person.

Nobody will apologize to anyone, of course, and the tories will just file this all away in their "so what?" file since they weren't successful in pinning this on anyone in the Liberal party.
