Random News & Views Roundup

Okay. Now that I've finished having my very public meltdown over the results of the parliamentary vote which extended the Canadian mission in Afghanistan until 2009, it's time to catch up on other news of the day.

- Confirmation hearings begin Thursday morning at 9:30pm ET for Bush's nominee for director of the CIA, the controversial General Michael Hayden. I will try to be up in time to host a live thread for those interested in watching and/or listening to the dicussion. You can catch the hearings online at CSPAN.

- Former NYT reporter Judith Miller now says she was warned about a possible 9/11 attack. So, let me get this straight: she went with numerous bogus stories about Saddam's WMDs and now she's saying that she didn't go with the 9/11 story because she wasn't sure? What the hell is wrong with this picture??

- No Rove indictment announced yet and t r u t h o u t does some 'splainin.

- The Ontario Provincial Police are trying to solve some unsolved mysteries. They've posted "photos of unidentified bodies and missing persons" on their site. (That is a link to the CBC story, not the actual site which may be disturbing to some.)

- Murtha: US Marines deliberately killed civilians in Haditha, Iraq.

Murtha, a vocal opponent of the war in Iraq, said at a news conference Wednesday that sources within the military have told him that an internal investigation will show that "there was no firefight, there was no IED (improvised explosive device) that killed these innocent people. Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood."

And people wonder why I have meltdowns over warmongers...

- How the telecom companies might be able to legally cover their butts in the NSA spying scandal.
